Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict.

1. Tao had to survive on his own till he found another rabbit. Another one is that he couldn't draw on the walls because it would offend the evil spirits.

2. I think Tao will survive. He seems not to be afraid and he knows alot. I think the evil spirit is something like an animal. I dont think it is really an evil spirit. It must be an animal.

Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter?

1. He hears something. Its sounds something like
Wa-woo-oong-eewoo-oo-wahoo. He thinks its the evil spirits. He not sure if he wants to see it. Another thing is that the little wolf/dog had a bone stuck behind his jaw. Tao help the animal to take out the bone. When he takes out the bone, the wolf is happy and has no more pain. Tao says that he is going to be a good hunter.

3. Look at Tao's decisions and actions from Volt's perspective. Pretend you are Volt. Write a first person paragraph explaining how you feel.

1.Tao and Ram learn to hunt together. They were able to get two eggs from the eagle-owl. Also, they caught two rabbits. They are making a good team and they should work and hunt together.

2. All Volt wants is that his people ae feed and do not go hungry. Tao in the other hand does not want to hunt with the other hunters in the tribe. He wants to hunt with Ram but the people believe that a wolf is an evil spirit. Volt told Tao that he can either hunt with them or by himself. If he hunts by himself, he will only eat when he brings food and if he hunts with the tribe he will eat all the time. He decides to hunt by himself with Ram.

3. I feel that Tao guy is breaking the laws. He is making everyone uncomfortable since he keeps breaking the law + its disrespectful. It is not allowed.

Chapter 4
In a good paragraph, describe Tao's mother. Start with an interest grabber. Then write your topic sentence. Give three details or examples to support your thesis. Use a quotation from the chapter.

1. Tao's Mother Was Called Vedra. She had a great son which grew up to be Tao. He is very strong and brave. He must of gotten this greatness from Vedra. She was very caring as told in the story. She gave birth to Tao in a cold winter. She had been captured when she was like Tao's Age. She had known her place good. She had been sucessful. Tao's dad was mean. I don't think he like Vedra. He let her die and wanted Tao to die. She was good while she lived.

1. Tao has broken two taboos. They are:

  • He is hunting with a wolf dog

  • He is hunting in forbidden land called the slough.

2. He doesn't know that he is painting in the cavern walls.

3. He says he's a good man. He has bee dreaming lately with evil demons and spirits.

Chapter 7
Write your reaction to the last paragraph in the chapter. Do you agree or disagree with Graybeard? Is what he says true for those times, but not now? Or, is the reverse true: was it not true then, but true now?

1. I do agree with Graybeard. That is a serious taboo. Its like religion, the religion that says that only certain people can paint because they have been the chosen one. Let's put it this why, its like if you catholic, you go to church. Then you go up to the priest and say, " Why do you get to do all of those cool tings like hear people sins or pass out crackers? I want to do that!" First of alll, it would be disrespectful + youu had broken your religion and your religion has their own consequences. He cares for Tao and he doesn't want him to get in trouble.

Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways.
The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. Imagine a similar situation today.
What situation did you imagine?
In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's rules? Give your opinion.

1. I imagine a granpa that always wanted to be a model of fashion. He wasn't able to do it when he was small but know he can do it, they don't let him since he's too old and he doesn't have "the look." People make other people feel bad because they don't got the moves, or the body. That won't stop him. He will continue to believe that he can do it.

2. I think that he should follow to persue his dreams. If he wants to do it, he should go on and believe in his dreams. It what he wants and he's not breaking the law. He's breaking the fashion law which states that he has to have "the look."

Chapter 9
Why do you think Graybeard changed his mind?
What does this tell you about his character?

1. I think Graybeard changed his mind because he wants everyone to be happy. He let Tao paint but he has to earsethe the images after he is done or he could get killed.

2. It shows that Graybeard is a good man. He stands strong and cares for the people of the area. He will be a good man thoughout the story, it seems.

2. Tao almost gets killed by a cow and a mammoth.

Chapter 11
1. Do you think Graybeard is a good teacher? Why?
2. Would you like to have been taught a skill by him? Why?

1. I think Graybeard is a good teacher. He is very tough but he seems to make painting easy and tries to make it easy and not complicated.

2. I don't think I would have liked to have been taught with a teacher like Graybeard because he kept making Tao feel a little bad because he kepts telling Tao that he is not doing right.

Chapter 12
1. Name some of the ingredients used to make paint. Which surprised you most?
2. Why is Tao afraid at the end of the chapter?

1. Some Ingredients Used to Make Paint:
  • Blood
  • Honey
  • Animal Fat
  • Eggs

2. The ingredient that suprised me most was the honey. It was shocking to me. I would have never guess that honey was used to make paint colors.

Chapter 13
1. Even if Ram had succeeded in hunting the deer, do you think it was a good idea of Tao's to "show off" his dog's ability to hunt? Explain.
2. Predict what will happen next. If you've read ahead, invent an alternate scene.

1. I don't thinks so because I don't think Volt will ever change his mind about wolf dogs. He thinks dogs are evil!!!!!!!!!!! (They are not Evil!)

2. I think that Tao will cross the river to avoid Garth and Volt.

Chapter 14
1. Why does Tao cross the river?
2. What decision does Graybeard reach?

1. Tao crosses the river because he told Ram to go to the other side because Volt and the hunters were comming.

2. Graybeard says that Tao will have to be the new cave painter. He is sick and not feeling good. He seems to want Tao to be the new cave painter because Graybeard has seen his talent and he could rise it his supervision if he kept up.

Chapter 17
Wow! What a chapter! What was your reaction? Tense? Surprised? You predicted it? Write a paragraph describing your reaction.

1. My reaction was sad. It was a wierd moment like if you were watching a sad movie where someone you get to love in a movie gets killed or dies.I would have never suspected tha Tao's father was Volt. It was astonishing. Volt didn't want Tao in my guess because it might ruin his style. I was looking suspicious at Volt because Volt kept helping Tao when he was fighting the bull. Ms. Zana is probally right. Volt felt guilty.

Chapter 18
Why does Tao feel he needs to go to the Mountain People?

1. Now he is following Graybeard's Footsteps. He is now the new shaman. He needed to tell The Mountain People about the news.

Extra Credit
Write a narrative describing what happens next. Make sure your plot has a conflict, a climax, and a resolution. You can introduce new characters if you want.

Tao is now the new shaman. He is really walking in Graybeard's Footsteps. He used to be just Tao. Now he is something important. He is the new shaman. He will be visiting many new tribes which he has never seen. It must be exciting for him. He will paint which is his favorite thing. He will be the best!
